In 1948, five Arab armies invaded the newly declared State of Israel. The most powerful among them, Transjordan’s Arab Legion, was trained, armed, and commanded by the British, led by British General John Glubb ("Glubb Pasha"). There has never been an independent Arab country called Palestine. The name "Palestine" was originally imposed by the Romans in 135 CE after crushing the Bar Kokhba revolt — a deliberate attempt to sever Jewish ties to the land by renaming Judea to "Syria Palaestina." For nearly 1,800 years after that, the name fell into disuse in official governance. During the 400 years of Ottoman rule (1516–1917), the region was never called Palestine administratively — it was divided into districts like the Mutasarrifate of Jerusalem and referred to generally as "Southern Syria." The name was only revived in 1920 when the British named their mandate "Palestine" for geopolitical convenience — not because it had ever existed as a sovereign entity.

The 1844 Ottoman census — the first official population count in Jerusalem’s history — recorded Jews as the largest religious group in the city. This Jewish majority continued to grow, with confirmations from reports by W.H. Young (1874), Vital Cuinet (1896), James Finn (1850s), César Famin (1853), Titus Tobler (1846), and Ernst-Gustav Schultz (1844). The 1922 British census made it official: 33,971 Jews vs. 13,413 Muslims — a nearly 3 to 1 Jewish majority over Muslims. In 1920, Britain was granted the Mandate for Palestine — covering all of today’s Israel and Jordan. But they carved off 77% to create Transjordan, which became Jordan in 1946. Israel is the only nation in the region with an ancient, continuous identity — on the same land, with the same name, language, faith, and people. Ironically, even “Jordan” (from Hebrew Yarden, “descent”) and “Lebanon” (Lavan, “white”) come from Hebrew.

Zionist immigration began in 1881 — nearly 70 years before Israel was established. From 1881 to 1948, not a single acre of land that became Israel was taken illegally. Land was bought legally under Ottoman and British land codes. 87% of Israel’s land in 1948 was classified as "mawat" (dead land) — uncultivated, ownerless, and often uninhabitable. Under the 1858 Ottoman Land Code, mawat land could be legally purchased and registered if cultivated and developed. Zionists followed this law, registered their land, and made it bloom.

Travelers like Mark Twain (1867), Laurence Oliphant (1887), Edward Robinson (1838), Volney (1783), Richard Pococke (1738), Alexander Keith (1843), Titus Tobler (1846), James Finn (1850s), and Karl Beeker (1876) described Palestine as barren, disease-ridden, and desolate.

The 1948 Arab exodus followed months of Arab violence against Palestinian Jews during the 1947 civil war and a full-scale invasion by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon in 1948. Arab militias massacred Jews in Kfar Etzion, ambushed medical convoys (Hadassah Convoy Massacre), and laid siege to Jerusalem. Meanwhile, 850,000 Jews were expelled from Arab countries. The Nakba wasn’t ethnic cleansing. It was blowback.

During the Holocaust, Britain limited Jewish immigration to 5,000 per year under the 1939 White Paper. Survivors were turned away or detained. Jewish resistance groups like Haganah and Irgun fought to bring in refugees. In response, the British executed 12 Jewish underground members by hanging, including teenagers!

From 1948 to 1967, the West Bank was annexed by Jordan and Gaza was occupied by Egypt. No one demanded a Palestinian state. Arabs in the West Bank were Jordanian citizens. It was only after Israel took these areas in the 1967 war that the world suddenly declared them "Palestinian territories."
